Let Us Now Praise Evans
Malcolm Jones wrote a wonderful review of the wonderful ebook, The Story of a Photograph, by Jerry L. Thompson. The story Thompson tells is about Walker Evans’ portrait of Ellie Mae Burroughs—the woman Evans made famous in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Thompson, one of Evans’ last assistants, covers how Evans came to take the portrait and how Burroughs came the pose for it—and along the way explores both the art and the craft of photography. As Malcolm writes:Anyone interested in Evans, the art of photography or simply the act of looking closely at the things of this world and the people in it will benefit from this lucid examination of one artist and one of his greatest works.
