At Apple’s live event in San Jose, the company has announced its iPad mini, a smaller version of its iPad tablet. “This isn’t just a shrunken down iPad,” says Apple’s Phil Schiller, touting its craftsmanship. The iPad mini, is 7.2mm thick. That’s about a quarter thinner than the 4th gen iPad. Schiller called it “thinner than a pencil.” It’s 0.68 lbs and 53% lighter and comes in black and white. 1. Mexico’s Presidential Win Raises Concerns: Mexico’s presidential elections resulted in the apparent return to power of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which ruled the country for more than 70 years before being ousted by the conservative National Action Party in 2000. 
2. Power Outages Could Last a Week: The eastern U.S. has been hit with fatal storms, power outages, and blistering heat for three straight days, with several cities hitting record highs and others declaring a state of emergency. After thunderstorms killed at least 15 people, more than 3 million lost power, adding to the excruciating heat. Charlotte, N.C.—one of the hardest-hit areas—reached 104 degrees on Sunday. 
3. Kidnapped Air Workers Released: Four European aid workers were released Monday after being kidnapped from Kenya’s Dadaab refugee complex near the Somali border last week. Two of them were injured and their Kenyan driver was killed. It’s unclear whether their kidnappers were members of Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda–affiliated group that’s been blamed for other recent kidnappings of tourists and aid workers from Kenya. 
4. Apple Pays $60M in iPad Case: Apple settled its trademark lawsuit in Chinese provincial court Monday, paying $60 million for the legal rights to the iPad trademark in China. 
5. ‘God Particle’ Footprint Found: It’s been a long, difficult—and, for most of us, incomprehensible—search, but scientists at the largest particle accelerator in the world have finally found evidence of the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle that gives the building blocks of matter mass.

1. Justice Department Warns Apple Over eBooks: Apple didn’t get to bask in the glory of its new iPad for long. The Justice Department has warned the company—along with five of the biggest U.S. publishers—that it plans to sue them for allegedly colluding to raise the price of electronic books, sources tell The Wall Street Journal. 
2. Newt Camp: Next Votes ‘Must Wins’: Gingrich is looking for hospitality in Southern states. Spokesman R.C. Hammond admitted that it’s going to be a long slog from here, telling reporters, “Everything between Spartanburg all the way to Texas, those all need to go for Gingrich.” 
3. Syria’s Oil Minister Joins Opposition: In a YouTube video, Syria’s deputy oil minister says he’s leaving Bashar al-Assad’s government and joining the opposition, the most high-profile defection since the revolt began.
4. Hate Groups on Rise: The number of hate groups operating in the United States continues to rise, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has tracked such groups for 30 years. Fed by dislike of President Obama, changing racial demographics, and the growing gap between rich and poor, the number of hate groups and antigovernment organizations grew to 1,018 last year. 
5. Pat Robertson: Legalize Pot: This is a shift from preaching conservative family values. Evangelist Pat Robertson’s newest cause is the legalization of marijuana. “I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,” Robertson told The New York Times. 
6. Utah Passes Anti-Sex Ed Bill: Utah’s sex-ed classes are about to get a lot shorter. The state’s legislature passed a bill that would ban public schools from teaching contraception as a way of preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. The bill also prohibits teaching about homosexuality.

1. Poll: Romney and Santorum Tied: Mitt Romney’s lead in the Republican primary race has been erased. According to a new poll by The New York Times, he and Rick Santorum are effectively tied.
2. Syria Forces ‘Shelling Randomly’: Nine people were reportedly killed Tuesday in Syria as opposition activists said that government snipers were randomly shelling civilians in Homs. 
3. China’s VP Visits White House: China’s Vice President Xi Jinping is visiting the Oval Office today in a closely watched diplomatic mission. It’s Xi’s first major step onto the international stage, a test run for when he takes over the presidency in March 2013.
4. Apple Factories to Get Outside Audit: Following recent reports and protests over inhumane working conditions at its Chinese suppliers, Apple has asked an outside organization to audit its plants. Until recently the company has strongly resisted divulging information about its suppliers.
5. Bombing Rocks Thai Capital: Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered police and the National Intelligence Agency to probe three explosions that occurred Tuesday in Bangkok’s Klongton district, with the Foreign Ministry assigned to talk to Iran because a suspect seriously injured in the blasts was believed to be Iranian.

1. Obama and Brewer Argue: When President Obama arrived in Phoenix on Wednesday, he and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer immediately got into it at the airport. Brewer told reporters that Obama was upset that her book Scorpions for Breakfast wasn’t “cordial” to him. Sweet title though.
2. Two Buildings Collapse in Rio: Two buildings collapsed in Rio, including one that was 20 stories high. Officials said three bodies have been recovered, but up to 19 people still remain missing. The cause of the collapse is unclear.
3. Polls: Romney Leads in Florida: Newt Gingrich’s surge following his South Carolina victory doesn’t seem to have lasted long. According to a new CNN poll, Mitt Romney and Gingrich are essentially tied. 
4. French Implant Maker Arrested: Jean-Claude Mas, the head of the defunct Poly Implant Prothese, was arrested before dawn in France Thursday in connection with his company’s use of industrial-grade silicone in tens of thousands of breast implants.  
5. Apple Audits: China  Labor Unsafe: As speculation about the iPhone 5 kicks into gear, The New York Times looks into the often brutal factory conditions that make such rapid improvement possible. Apple’s own audits found that hundreds of its supply factories in China require employees—some as young as 15—to work more than 60 hours a week, or more than 6 days a week, sometimes in deadly conditions.
