It’s not a stretch to say that Planned Parenthood’s tactics to force the Susan G. Komen Foundation to restore their funding were no less than a Mafia-style shakedown of a charity whose only purpose is to help prevent and treat breast cancer.
Penny Nance, CEO and president of the conservative Concerned Women for America, says Planned Parenthood bullied Komen with mob-like maneuvers tactics.
“There was an open and candid conversation about the controversy and the effect on Komen. There was a gentle ladies’ agreement, if you will, that no one was going to go to the press about this.”
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast, former Komen VP Karen Handel alleges that Planned Parenthood bullied Komen and broke a secret pact.
We can all agree that this is a challenging and deeply unsettling situation for all involved in the fight against breast cancer. However, Komen’s decision to change its granting strategy and exit the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and its grants was fully vetted by every appropriate level within the organization. At the November Board meeting, the Board received a detailed review of the new model and related criteria. As you will recall, the Board specifically discussed various issues, including the need to protect our mission by ensuring we were not distracted or negatively affected by any other organization’s real or perceived challenges. No objections were made to moving forward.

While Komen was being lambasted, Planned Parenthood received a flood of support, raising a staggering $3 million in donations in three days—more than four times as much as it got from Komen last year. “We haven’t been able to take all the calls of people who wanted to support us,” Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said on a conference call. “I’ve been doing this kind of work for a long, long time, and I’ve never seen anything catch fire like [this].”

In an official statement, Susan G. Komen For The Cure has amended it’s previous decision to change their criteria for making grants, one that would have halted its funding to Planned Parenthood.
