So there isn’t a lot of data about its effect. And it may turn out to be a—a good thing; it may turn out not to be a good thing, as the supporters of Proposition 8 apparently believe.
But you want us to step in and render a decision based on an assessment of the effects of this institution which is newer than cell phones or the Internet? I mean we — we are not — we do not have the ability to see the future.

As a conservative concerned with stabilizing families to rely less on government aid, I have been convinced: I’ve been worrying about the wrong thing. Stopping same-sex marriages does nothing to support families battered by economic adversity. Instead, it excludes and punishes people who seek only to live as conservatives would urge them to live. Treating same-sex partnerships differently from husband-wife marriages only serves to divide and antagonize those who ought to be working together.
David Frum, our conservative columnist, was one of dozens of prominent Republicans who recently signed a brief in support of gay marriage. Read Frum’s explanation of why he signed.

We are past the point in this country now where one’s views on homosexuality can be called a “matter of conscience.” No. Being against equality here isn’t a matter of conscience anymore than having been against racial equality in 1955 was. It is just bigotry plain and simple. Enough. Piss off. Go form your own Boy Scouts. Go form your own stupid country. You aren’t America anymore.

President Obama responds to 10-year-old’s letter about her two gay dads.

“I am so glad that you agree two men can love each other because I have two dads and they love each other, but at school kids think that it’s gross and weird, but it really hurts my heart and feelings…,” Sophia wrote last week.

His response, which was no form letter:

“They are lucky to have such an exceptional daughter in you.”

“…We recognize that whether you have two dads or one mom what matters above all is the love we show one another. You are very fortunate to have two parents who care very deeply for you.”

A reader: Just because you’re christian and pro-traditional family, that doesn’t mean you’re anti-gay. i like vanilla ice cream but that doesn’t mean i hate chocolate.
nwktumblr: But if you actively campaign to keep chocolate out of ice cream stores, what then?

This is going to turn into something interesting.

Chick-Fil-A came under criticism this month after a report by the organization Equality Matters revealed that the company donated around $2 million to antigay Christian organizations in 2010. “Guilty as charged,” the fast-food chain’s president Dan Cathy said over allegations that his company is antigay.
So. Here we are. Tumblr, listen up.
We’re hoping to find a current or former employee of Chick-Fil-A who might want to spill the beans on life inside the alleged antigay company.
If that’s you, or you know someone who might want to talk to us, please email brian.ries@newsweekdailybeast.com. And if you’d like to help spread the word of our search, a reblog or a tweet would be most appreciated.

There weren’t too many people who were very supportive of my being a lesbian. Homosexuality wasn’t something people talked about at my school and wasn’t an OK thing for most people there, so they bullied me for it.

I had over 200 kids in my grade and everyone found out and they all had the same attitude about it. I would overhear things in the hallway and people would say things directly to me—even in the classrooms.

Katy Butler, who’s pushing a petition to have the ‘R’ rating from documentary Bully (trailer) removed, tells us about her own experiences being bullied

It’s a time-honored tradition at Navy homecomings – one lucky sailor is chosen to be first off the ship for the long-awaited kiss with a loved one.
Today, for the first time, the happily reunited couple was gay.

The dock landing ship Oak Hill has been gone for nearly three months, training with military allies in Central America.

As the homecoming drew near, the crew and ship’s family readiness group sold $1 raffle tickets for the first kiss. Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta bought 50 - which is actually fewer than many people buy, she said, so she was surprised Monday to find out she’d won.

Her girlfriend of two years, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell, was waiting when she crossed the brow.

They kissed. The crowd cheered. And with that, another vestige of the policy that forced gays to serve in secrecy vanished.
