1. U.N.: Justify Drone Use, U.S.: A United Nations investigator on Tuesday called on Washington to justify its policy of killing al Qaeda and Taliban suspects, rather than capturing them, at the risk of harming civilians.

2. Pakistan Court Bans P.M. From Office: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday disqualified Prime Minister Raza Gilani from holding office, two months after finding him in contempt of court.

3. G20 Urges European Solution: More ominous news out of Europe. As the G20 summit started in Mexico, leaders expressed concern over the mushrooming debt crisis in Europe—while fears over Spain’s financial health grew after the news that the country’s borrowing costs soared.

4. UK Stops Russian Shipment: President Obama and Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday jointly called for peace in Syria, but Putin refused to support the U.S. efforts to persuade Syrian president Bashar al-Assad from power.

5. Microsoft Reveals ‘Surface’ Tablet: Microsoft is finally ready to take on the iPad. The company unveiled its new Surface tablet at an event in Los Angeles on Monday.

1. Andy Coulson Detained for Perjury: Andy Coulson, the former editor of News of the World and Prime Minister David Cameron’s former press secretary, was detained Wednesday in connection to a perjury inquiry. 
2. Charles Taylor Gets 50 Years: The International Criminal Court at The Hague on Wednesday sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison for aiding and abetting rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in return for blood diamonds. In the ruling, presiding Judge Richard Lussaick said Taylor is “in a class of his own” when compared with others convicted by the United Nations–backed court. 
3. Russia, China Oppose Syria Action: Russia and China both opposed a United Nations–sponsored intervention on Wednesday, one day after special envoy Kofi Annan returned from Damascus and said that Syria is at a “tipping point.” Russia’s deputy foreign minister said Wednesday that the country is “categorically against” foreign intervention in Syria and that any new steps by the Security Council—on which both Russia and China hold important veto power—would be “premature.”
4. Britain Clears Assange Extradition: A British high court ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be extradited to Sweden, where he faces sexual-abuse allegations. The British government is expected to announce an extradition within 10 days, and on the appointed date, Assange will be handed over to Swedish authorities. 
5. Trump Steals Romney’s Spotlight: Donald Trump sure knows how to crash a party. The real-estate mogul grabbed headlines Tuesday after arguing with Wolf Blitzer—and then appeared at a Las Vegas fundraiser Tuesday with Mitt Romney, who had just clinched the Republican nomination. Romney thanked Trump for use of his Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, and said he “appreciated” Trump’s help.

1. Suu Kyi to Boycott Parliament: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and her fellow Burmese opposition lawmakers will boycott Monday’s historic Parliament opening, her party, the National League for Democracy, announced Friday.
2. White House Supports Secret Service Head: White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday the Obama administration has confidence in Mark Sullivan, the director of the Secret Service, even though 11 agents are under investigation for consorting with prostitutes while on official business in Colombia last week. Carney added that the president’s security was never in jeopardy in Cartagena. 
3. Breivik: I Learned From al Qaeda: Confessed Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik said he read case studies of al Qaeda attacks before he went on a shooting rampage that killed 77 last July, he told the court Friday during day five of his sensational public trial in Oslo.
4. U.N. Observers Monitor Syria: Seven United Nations observers have been deployed in Syria to ensure compliance with a brokered ceasefire that the government has largely failed to uphold, a spokesman for U.N. envoy Kofi Annan said Friday. The rest of an advanced team of about 30 unarmed monitors is expected in the coming days. 
5. Poll: National Mood Improving: It’s getting better all the time. According to a CNN/ORC International survey released Friday, 43 percent of Americans say things are going well in the country, 3 points higher from February but up a huge 19 points from August. But 57 percent say things are still going badly.

Romney Struggles to Close Gender Gap: In the wake of Rick Santorum’s departure from the presidential race, Mitt Romney’s campaign contended with the former Massachusetts governor’s struggle to win female voters. On the first day of the campaign’s strategy to turn criticism of Romney back on Obama, Romney repeatedly touted the misleading claim that 92 percent of job losses under Obama affected women. 
2. U.N. Ceasefire Holds in Syria: A U.N.-brokered peace agreement appeared to hold Thursday after the government of Bashar al-Assad halted attacks on rebel forces ahead of the planned deadline. But the country’s defense ministry reserved the right to retaliate against “armed terrorist groups,” casting doubt on the agreement’s longer-term viability. 
3. Ann Romney Joins Twitter to Respond to Hilary Rosen’s Comments: Solid Storify from the Washington Post. 
4. Zimmerman Due in Court Thursday: A lawyer for George Zimmerman, the Florida man who killed the unarmed Trayvon Martin during a neighborhood watch patrol, said his client will plead not guilty to second degree murder charges announced Wednesday. 
5. Weekly Jobless Claim Up: The number of Americans filing for unemployment rose in the first week in April, bringing the total number of jobless claims up to the highest levels since January. The news came shortly after the economy showed signs of slowing March, with only 120,000 jobs added.

1. Santorum: ‘It’s Halftime’: Rick Santorum may have suffered a triple defeat and be trailing in endorsements, money, and delegates—272 to Mitt Romney’s 646, according to the Associated Press—but he’s not bowing out yet. “It’s halftime,” he said at a rally in Mars, Pa., last night. 
2. Mogadishu Theater Bombed: The heads of Somalia’s Olympic committee and football association were among the seven people killed in a bombing at a theater in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, early Tuesday. The Somali prime minister, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, was also present at the theater but he said he was unhurt.
3. U.N. Team Races to Damascus: So much for the truce pledge. The United Nations said on Tuesday that it is rushing a team to Damascus after the Syrian regime sent reinforcements into rebel areas. The Syrian regime reportedly continued to bombard Homs and other cities, despite promising to withdraw troops in obedience to a U.N. peace plan. 
4. Suspected Shooter Had Troubled Past: More details are emerging about One L. Goh, the man suspected of killing seven people at a nursing school on Monday. Goh came back to Oakland, where his ailing father lived, after running into financial difficulties in Hayes, Va. 
5. Romney Takes WI, MD, DC: Everything is coming up Romney. Riding a wave of high-profile endorsements, Mitt Romney won clear victories in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., last night, solidifying his place as the Republican frontrunner and presumptive nominee. “Republicans are unifying,” said Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, a recent Romney backer.

1. Obama’s Economic Approval Rises: Just last summer President Obama’s economic approval rating was a very low 26 percent. Obama must be doing something right, or at least it must appear that way to more people, because now 38 percent of Americans are happy with the way he’s handling the economy.
2. Greek Leaders Strike Deal on Cuts: Greek leaders on Thursday reached a deal for deep austerity cuts, a government official has confirmed. By enacting austerity cuts, Greece is now eligible to receive bailout funds from the European Union—and thus will avoid defaulting on its debt.
3. U.S. to Approve New Nuke Plants: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is set to approve two new nuclear reactors, to be built in Georgia. 
4. U.N. Mulls Syria Observer Mission: The U.N. is expected to consider an Arab League proposal for a joint monitoring mission in Syria, while the U.S., Turkey, and other countries are creating a “Friends of Democratic Syria” as a way to support the opposition.
5. States Reach $26 Billion Mortgage Deal: The five largest banks in the U.S. agreed to a $26 billion settlement for the roles they played in the mortgage meltdown.
