On last week’s Saturday Night Live, Miley Cyrus did an impression of Michele Bachmann twerking with House Speaker John Boehner. Afterwards, Congresswoman Bachmann said that her office received calls from people who thought it was actually her in the parody.
And here’s the next son-defends-lesbian-moms video we predict will be going viral.
At a South Carolina book signing, an 8-year-old boy named Elijah whispered to Bachmann, “My mom is gay and she doesn’t need fixing.” Bachmann responded with a blank expression, then waved to him as he runs away. The person who filmed the event told Chicago Now that Elijah’s mom had been standing in line to speak to Bachmann herself, but decided she was too nervous. But Elijah insisted that they stay so he could give Bachmann the message himself.
Good job, Elijah!
On Monday, Bachmann didn’t talk a lot about her religion. She didn’t have to—she knows how to signal it in ways that go right over secular heads. In criticizing Obama’s Libya policy, for example, she said, “We are the head and not the tail.” The phrase comes from Deuteronomy 28:13: “The Lord will make you the head and not the tail.” As Rachel Tabachnick has reported, it’s often used in theocratic circles to explain why Christians have an obligation to rule.
