We’ve had these problems ever since the Emancipation Proclamation. Once the whites leave town, all you’ve got is overwhelming lawlessness.
This is hardly the first time Rush Limbaugh’s said something offensive.
The above comment was in reference to Hurricane Katrina and the botched post-storm clean-up. Limbaugh declared, “It’s not George Bush’s fault!” While Bush admitted his administration’s inability to deal with the chaos, Limbaugh blamed it on black people who “wanted to rape and loot!”
For years, Ron Paul published a series of newsletters that dispensed political news and investment advice, but also routinely indulged in bigotry. Here’s a selection of some especially inflammatory passages.“The Los Angeles riots of 1992: ‘Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks three days after rioting began. … What if the checks had never arrived? No doubt the blacks would have fully privatized the welfare state through continued looting. But they were paid off and the violence subsided.’”Continue reading here.
Our Michael Tomasky says it’s time for Paul to answer these charges of racism. A sampling: “Among Republicans and conservatives, there simply aren’t enough people who care whether he’s a racist or not.”
The more you learn about the real lives of real people, the less able you are to subscribe to self-serving and nationalistic myths that feed a racist culture.
